Formation of Spheroidal Galaxies: the Sub-mm View

چکیده

The intensity of the Cosmic Far-IR Background and the strong evolution of galaxies in the far-IR to mm wavelength range demonstrate that the bulk of starlight emitted during the early phases of galaxy evolution was reprocessed by dust. Therefore, the optical view of the galaxy formation process is highly incomplete and biased, and must be complemented with far-IR/sub-mm observations. We review the impact of sub-mm surveys on our understanding of the evolutionary history of spheroidal galaxies. A recent model, bringing into play also the inter-relationships between formation and early evolution of spheroidal galaxies and quasars, is described and some implications are outlined.

Joint Formation of Qsos and Spheroids

In view of the extensive evidence of tight inter-relationships between spheroidal galaxies (and galactic bulges) with massive black holes hosted at their centers, a consistent model must deal jointly with the evolution of the two components. We describe one such model, which successfully accounts for the local luminosity function of spheroidal galaxies, for their photometric and chemical proper...

Observational tests of the evolution of spheroidal galaxies

Granato et al. (2004a) have elaborated a physically grounded model exploiting the mutual feedback between star-forming spheroidal galaxies and the active nuclei growing in their cores to overcome, in the framework of the hierarchical clustering scenario for galaxy formation, one of the main challenges facing such scenario, i.e. the fact that massive spheroidal galaxies appear to have formed muc...

Astrophysical and Cosmological Information from Large-scale sub-mm Surveys of Extragalactic Sources

We present a quantitative analysis of the astrophysical and cosmological information that can be extracted from the many important wide-area, shallow surveys that will be carried out in the next few years. Our calculations combine the predictions of the physical model by Granato et al. (2004) for the formation and evolution of spheroidal galaxies with up-to-date phenomenological models for the ...

A New View of the Dwarf Spheroidal Satellites of the Milky Way from Vlt/flames1: Where Are the Very Metal Poor Stars?

As part of the Dwarf galaxies Abundances and Radial-velocities Team (DART) Programme, we have measured the metallicities of a large sample of stars in four nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph): Sculptor, Sextans, Fornax and Carina. The low mean metal abundances and the presence of very old stellar populations in these galaxies have supported the view that they are fossils from the early Univ...
